History
From the inscriptions known until today it seems that Milos was named like that from historical times. Some writers mention Milos as Vivlis, Mimallis, Zafyria, Akitos and Bilos. Others have said that it is a colony of Phoenixes and others that first inhabitant was Milos from the generation of king of Cyprus Kimiras.
Milos was influenced by the mycenic civilization fact that is proven by the findings kept till today in the prehistoric town of Fylakopis. Fylakopi is considered to be the first town of Milos.
During the Byzantine age Milos suffered by the attacks of pirates, wars against the Slaves and mostly against Arabs.
Milos was on of the first island of the Cyclades complex that participated in the revolution of 1821 against the Turks. In 1824 refuges from Crete island and the village of Sfakia built today’s village of Adamantas. During the first world war the port of Milos was used as a navy base of the English – French fleet of Aegean Sea. During the second world war Milos was captured by Germans in May 1941 and released in May 1945.
The Archaeological museum is in Plaka on the direction of Tripiti .
It is hosted in a neoclassical building , a work of E.Tsiller built in 1870.
In the narrow roads of Plaka and on the way to Marmara opposite to the church Korfiatissa , is the folk art Museum of Milos which was built in 1967 by the UNION of Milos. The museum presents objects of peoples every day use related to the traditional life of the locals of the island.
